About CarXray.nl
CarXray.nl uses official APK data to show how often the inspector finds defects per car model and age — free, without an account and independent.
Why we do this
People buying a used car mostly hear stories: from the seller, from forums, from acquaintances. At every APK the RDW records which defects the inspector found. That data is public but not easy to read. We turn it into the one question buyers really have: how often does this model have a serious problem at this age, compared with other cars of the same age?
How we work
- Every month we reprocess the RDW open datasets: 6,857,004 inspected passenger cars in the latest window.
- All inspected cars count in the denominator, not only the failed ones. Each car counts once.
- We show the number of observations and the 95% confidence interval, and no percentage below 200 cars.
- The full method is on How we know; the figures can be downloaded as open data.
Independent
CarXray.nl is not affiliated with the RDW, car makers, dealers or garages. Nobody pays for a place in the rankings or for an assessment. Should we earn income from referrals in the future (for example to a history report or insurance), we will mark them clearly as advertising and they have no influence on the figures.
What is still in development
The grouping of RDW defect codes into A, B and C problems is our own and is still being reviewed by a certified APK inspector. The boundaries between model generations are derived from RDW type codes and are being checked step by step.
