Had an accident? What to do, step by step

  1. 1

    Make it safe

Move the cars aside if possible, hazard lights on, and place the warning triangle if needed. Is anyone injured or is there danger? Call 112 at once.

  2. 2

Need the police, but no emergency?

For example if the other party refuses to give details: call 0900-8844. If the other driver leaves, note the plate; if you saw the vehicle but not the plate, report it to the police within 48 hours.

  3. 3

    Record everything

Photos of both cars, the plates, the damage and the situation: road signs, lights, the position on the road. Note names and phone numbers of witnesses; a witness can be decisive.

  4. 4

Fill in the accident statement together

Fill in the front of the European accident statement together with the other party: details, insurers, circumstances and a sketch. Sign only if you agree with everything. Each keeps a copy; if you printed it yourself, take a photo. Digitally it works with MobielSchadeMelden, except in a chain collision or with a foreign vehicle.

  5. 5

    Report it to your insurer

As soon as possible. You complete the back of the form at home. Since 2025 the form also asks whether a handheld phone was used; old forms remain valid.

  6. 6

    Driver unknown or uninsured?

Report it to the police and report the damage to the Waarborgfonds Motorverkeer (motor guarantee fund) within 14 days, often through your own insurer. Property damage has an own risk of € 250, injury does not. With all-risk insurance your own insurer may pay.
